The Saluki is a gentle pet. They are also known as Arabian Hound, Gazelle Hound, Persian Greyhound, Persian Sighthound or Royal Dog of Egypt. This dog breed was originated from Middle East. It was an ancient dog breed and considered as one of the fourteen ancient dog breeds. The Fourteen ancient dog breeds consist of Afghan Hound, Akita Inu, Alaskan Malamute, Basenji, Chow Chow, Lhasa Apso, Pekingese, Saluki, Samoyed, Shar Pei, Shiba Inu, Shih Tzu, Siberian Husky and Tibetan Terrier. Saluki Dog was named after the Arabian city. Saluki Dogs were used to be the big game sight hunters. They were brought to England in 1840 and were recognized by American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1929.

  • Temperament – The Saluki Dog is affectionate, even-tempered, intelligent, independent and sensitive. They can get along with children. They have a natural hunting dog instinct and tend to chase non-canine animals. Proper socialization and early training is essential for Saluki puppy. Harsh training is not suitable for this dog breed. Saluki Dogs are good watch dog and aloof to strangers. They must keep on leash when they are at outside and they prefer to live inside the house.
  • Appearance – The Saluki looks graceful. The head is long and narrow. They come with a pair of large eyes. The long ears are hanging close to the head. The nose is black and the long neck is well-muscled. They have straight front legs and strong hind legs. They have a long tail which curled at the back. There are two type of Saluki which is smooth variety and rare smooth variety. The rare smooth variety comes with no feathering whereas the smooth variety has silky feather on hair and tail.
